This is a report of the weekly meeting we had today (5 February 2010). For all who did not attend and needed a rough picture of what happened, please proceed on reading.

Today marks the day where the hardware courses for the Junior members officially began. Our Coursemaster, Tey Kay Yik, aided by our Vice Treasurer, Chu Kah Leong, had conducted the hardware course for the Junior members of our club. Despite a few complications such as the malfunction of the projector, the course continued on with great success as the Junior members all listened to Kay Yik's words attentively and we are confident that they have enjoyed their fist lesson in Itanium Solutions.

Unlike the previous years, the senior members attended a forum, titled "The Random Corner", instead of partaking the hardware courses meant for the Junior Members. In the Random Corner, we had discussions on tech related info and trvia such as the iPad as well as Project Natal. Our President also shed some light regarding the properties of region-locking, e-books, as well as LCD and LED displays. The forum session was quite a success.

Shortly after the Hardware course and the forum, our teacher adviser reminded us to check the equipments in the computer lab to ensure that everything was intact and nothing went missing or was stolen. The courses were then officially dismissed.

The 2.30pm to 4.00pm meeting began in 5P4. Topics we've discussed about included the web-hosting sevices involving the School Management System. Out president also gave the form 4s a tutorial on important matters so that they will have the ability to take over the club as the new form 5 batch next year. Our president also commanded the secretaries to write sponsorship letters and a letter requesting permission from the school regarding IT Week 2010. The meeting ended at 4.00pm.

First of all, congratulations and a big welcome to all new members! As for the seniors, welcome back!

Today was our first meeting for the year 2010 and we were glad to see the good response from the new members and existing members as well. It will be good for all of us as a part of Itanium Solutions to go through the challenges awaitng us ahead, learn and also experience the fun through our activities and events together.

Based on the interview conducted, we concluded that most of our new members did not have a clear idea or expectations on what they expect to learn in Itanium Solutions.

To start off the day, we had a short introduction on our club. Who we are? Of course, we are Catholic High's premiere computer club. Our goal is to let our members understand the computer in and out.

Next, we had a simple exercise to warm everyone up. From the exercise, it was found that majority of our members do know quite well on basic knowledge of computers. Here are some interesting facts:

Most of us.....
1. Run Windows XP.
2. Use Streamyx, followed by Celcom Broadband and Maxis Broadband as our ISP, with speeds 512 kbps - 1 Mbps.
3. Run Intel processors.
4. Use desktops.
5. Turn on the computer once per day
6. Senior members like to leave their computers 24/7.
7. Have RAM ranging from <1GB - 2GB
8. Have hard disk space of 80GB - 320GB

Here are some general knowledge that we discussed:

1. bit, byte, kilobyte (KB), megabyte (MB), gigabyte (GB), terabyte, betabyte, exabyte....
2. hertz, megahertz, gigahertz......
3. The fastest frequency for Pentium 4 manufactured is 3.4 GHz.
4. The fastest frequency for Pentium 3 is 800 MHz.
5. We are currently using USB 2.0 technology, but moving into USB 3.0 (please read up)

Reminders:
1. Deadline for member's fee is on the 5th of February 2010. Please pay to Lim Yi Xian of 5S3 or Chu Kah Leong of 5P3.
2. Courses will be starting next week, please bring along a pen and a notebook.
3. There will be an evaluation test every year.

Regards,
Leow Ker Leet

WELCOME TO ITANIUM SOLUTIONS

After the interviews we had last week, Itanium Solutions kicked off with our first official meeting today. Attendance was very much satisfactory and showed plenty of promise.

Confirmation of New Members

President Timothy Goh conducted the meeting by beginning with a warm welcome note to everyone. As a procedure, he began reading out the names of the new junior members one by one, and to confirm their presence by asking them to raise their hands. Once done, the seniors stood up for the juniors to catch a good glimpse of them, and in the case of anything that requires troubleshooting, the juniors can confront the seniors.

Introduction to Itanium Solutions

No usual teacher-to-student-like lessons were conducted today but instead, we had an interactive meeting today in which the seniors and juniors had a medium to communicate and socialise. This might spur the spirit and enthusiasm of the new batch of members so that they will continue to enjoy the coming Friday lessons

Some of the interesting stuff we did today are stated below:-

- Internet service provider questionnaire

- A simple breakdown of how dial-up and DSL connections work

- Hard disk and RAM survey

- The evolution of Intel microprocessors: from Celeron to Pentium to Core

- Introduction of the new USB 3.0 data transfer system

In no time, it was 1.40pm and the meeting had to be halted. Few members paid their respective fees to Vice Treasurer Chu Kah Leong. All in all, it was a fun meeting today with the new members and let's hope they will continue with us all the way throughout the year. So, once again, welcome to the premiere computing club of CHS, Itanium Solutions.

Best regards,

The Secretarial Department

Itanium Solutions 2010.
